Fearful To Fearless To Debut October 1st, 2010
Mount Vernon resident Jeff Kusner is scheduled to mark the debut of his new book “Fearful To Fearless” with a book signing during the October 1st first Friday event in downtown Mount Vernon at the Gospel Supply Shop from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Writing “Fearful To Fearless” is something that has been on Kusner’s heart for more than ten years. Wanting something he could pick up when he needed to hear a short word from God in the area of fear and worry, he said that he “was actually waiting for someone else to write it.”
“I’m not alone,” said Kusner, noting that according to the National Institute of Mental health (NIMH), approximately 40 million American adults age 18 and older, or over 18 percent of people in this age group have anxiety disorders in a given year.
Following his retirement from a large financial institution, he felt compelled to undertake the project himself. The inspiration for “Fearful To Fearless” is the biblical account of Christ calming the storm in Mark, Chapter 4. The passage demonstrates the disciples’ transformation from being afraid and calling out to Christ, fearing they were going to perish in the storm, to being filled with the fear of God and all His goodness, which is a reverent awe that is honoring and glorifying to Christ.
Kusner said that he spent a year and a half researching and studying a number of bible translations and commentaries to identify the scripture passages relating to fear, worry and the fear of God. “I prayed about what each passage had to say,” he said, in order to uncover a concise biblical truth that put the passage in context for him. In the end he identified almost 400 scripture references.
“Fearful To Fearless” follows the format of a devotional, bringing together those passages that demonstrate or direct us to not be afraid, to not worry or be anxious, to look to Christ for strength and comfort, and to be transformed to have a worshipful fear and awe of God. Each passage is accompanied by a short biblical truth to help provide clarity and encouragement.
While Kusner has authored a number of articles that have appeared in different technical journals and books over the years, “Fearful To Fearless” marks his first work into this literary arena.
